Gerald “Gerry” William Lewis, 80

Gerald “Gerry” William Lewis, 80, a lifelong Capac resident, passed away quietly on Friday, January 3, 2025, at McLaren Port Huron Hospital, surrounded by family.
He was born at Port Huron Hospital on June 22, 1944, the son of William and Margaret (Showler) Lewis.
He married Jane Winslow was on May 23, 1980, at Capac United Methodist Church.
Gerry graduated in 1962 from Capac High School, where he played football and basketball. Gerry started working for Siegel Appliance in 1962 and worked for the Village of Capac Police Department from 1968 to 1971. He became the building administrator for Mussey Township in 1973, then began Lewis Appliance in 1974.
Gerry joined the Capac-Mussey Township Fire Department in 1965, was promoted to First Lieutenant in 1968, Captain in 1976, and then Assistant Chief in 1985. That year, he received an Outstanding Officers award from the St. Clair County Firefighters Association. He became President of the St. Clair County Fire Chiefs Association in 1994, before retiring as Capac-Mussey Township’s Fire Chief in 2005.
Gerry enjoyed hunting and loved flying into Northern Ontario for fishing trips. He and his wife and best friend, Jane, traveled a lot together. There are so many memories of this unforgettable man, father, grandfather, and husband.
Gerry loved his family, friends, town, and home, and everyone knew that if his two garage doors were open, he would be ready for a beer. From the basement parties, pool parties, garage parties, home parties, and Christmas Swiss steak dinners no one will forget, Gerry welcomed anyone and everyone. He loved inviting people to spend time with himself and Jane to share memories and make memories with his wonderful family and friends. Gerry was a great mentor to some. They just don’t make them like him anymore.
The family would like to thank all of Gerry’s buddies who included him in lunches and other things during these last years. Gerry enjoyed his time with you all.
Gerry is survived by Jane, his wife of 44 years, and two children, Steve (Jenny) Lewis of Emmett and Renee Payne of Niagara Falls, New York; five grandchildren, Hilary (Jason Clark), Jeneveve, Seth (Payton) Lewis, Remington, and Joseph Montney; two great-grandsons, Hudson and Asher Clark; sister-in-law, Joann (Bill) Stoutenburg; brother-in-law, Doug (Wayne) Winslow; as well as many friends.
