Mary Lou Schaefer, 70

Mary Lou Schaefer, 70, passed away peacefully on Tuesday October 1, 2024, after a four-year battle with cancer. She passed away at her home with her loving wife by her side. Lou was born on May 10, 1954, to Bert and Virginia (Lauwers) Schaefer. She was the fourth of six children. Lou grew up in Capac and was a 1972 graduate of Capac High School. She married the love of her life, Brenda R. Young on September 12, 2009.

Lou had a huge faith and spent a few years in the Covent with the Adrian Dominican Sisters. During her years in the Convent, she spent time in Georgia helping the poor. Lou eventually left the Convent and began working at Kelly Services as a manager in accounts receivable until her many health issues forced her into an early retirement. She loved to sing and performed with the metro Detroit Area Sweet Adelines. She also sang at many weddings for family and friends.

Lou loved to spend time with her family and friends. She especially loved her many nieces and nephews and liked to keep up with what was happening in their lives through posts and pictures on Facebook.

Lou is survived by her wife of 15 years, Brenda; her siblings, sister Chris (Dave) Pophal; brothers Bob (Elaine) Schaefer, John Schaefer, Ron (Patti) Schaefer, Tom (Tanya) Schaefer; sister-in-law Kathleen (Bob) Dazey; brothers-in-law Wayne Young and William Young. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great­ great nieces and nephews, as well as her dog Coco.

Lou was preceded in death by her mother, Virginia Schaefer; father, Bert Schaefer; mother-in law Clata Watson; father- in-law William Young; sister-in-law Jill (Godo) Schaefer; brothers-in-law Robert Young and Lou Young.

The family would like to give a huge thank you to the Gentiva Hospice for the wonderful care that they gave Lou in her last days. Their staff ((Kathrine (RN), Michelle (RN), Thadius (RN), Becky (Social Worker (NA)) did a great job of bringing comfort to Lou and Brenda during Lou’s final days.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday October 12, 2024, at the American Legion Hall, 115 N. Main St. Capac, Ml 48014. Family will be available for visitors from 1 p.m.-3 p.m. with a memorial service at 3 p.m. Dear friend of Lou, Ellen Burkhardt, will be the officiant for the service.
