Sports briefs: Dryden goes to 3-0 for the season

DRYDEN — Dryden defeated host Merritt Academy, 50-16, in a Big Thumb Conference Blue Division varsity football meeting last Friday afternoon. 

With the decision, Dryden raises their mark to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the BTC Blue division. Merritt Academy drops to 1-2 and 0-1.

Dryden managed their 50-point total aided by a Santiago Perales 30-yard punt return for a touchdown (followed by an Adam Cooper PAT tote); a Gianni Coscione 21-yard touchdown run (followed by a Coscione PAT tote); a Brady Schneider 52-yard punt return (followed by a Schneider PAT tote); a Schneider 25-yard touchdown run (followed by a Coscione PAT tote); a Luke Kage one-yard touchdown run; a Coscione to Schneider 80-yard touchdown pass; and a Luke Taylor 52-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Coscione completed one of one pass plays for 80 yards as Dryden’s quarterback. 

Schneider hauled in the lone Dryden reception. The Dryden ground attack managed 93 yards on 12 totes. Coscione (two rushes for 31 yards) and Logan Korth (27 yards on five totes) proved Dryden’s most productive ballcarriers. The remaining five Cardinal rushes netted a combined 35-yard gain. Taylor (13) and Schneider (nine) collected the top Dryden tackle totals. They were backed by Callum Brown (seven stops), Quinton Towell (six) and Coscione (five).

Dryden will aim to stay unbeaten this Friday when they entertain Mayville in the annual homecoming game, set to kick off at 7 p.m. 

Capac drops game to Memphis

CAPAC — Capac was handed a 30-6 setback by visiting Memphis in a Big Thumb Conference Gold Division varsity football contest last Friday night.

With the outcome, Memphis moves to 2-1 and 1-0. Capac slips to 0-3 and 0-1.

In Friday’s contest, Memphis used a 22-0 opening half edge and an 8-6 second half edge to prevail.

The hosts generated their six-point total aided by a two-yard touchdown pass from Parker Lewis to Bryce Lietz. The score came during quarter number three.

Capac will look to bounce back this Friday when it hosts Burton Bentley. The Big Thumb Conference Gold Division meeting, set for 7 p.m., is Capac’s homecoming game.

Imlay City gives Yale a loss, ties Sandusky

IMLAY CITY — Imlay City returned from Yale with a 6-2 victory in a Blue Water Area Conference boys’ tennis encounter on Tuesday, Sept. 8,

In individual action, Levi Lengemann registered a 6-3, 6-2 top flight triumph against Emmett Verhelle; Griffin Wetzel obtained a 6-3, 6-0 win over Cole Hackett at second singles; Drew Schriber furnished a 6-1, 6-1 third flight victory against Wyatt Kavanagh; andJoey Nerkowski posted a 6-4, 1-6, 10-7 triumph over Lucas Fox.

As far as doubles play was concerned, Jeremy Alter and Trace Dennis earned a 6-1, 6-1 top flight win against Landon Martel and Chris Monroy; Isaac Lindquist and Clark DeClean fell 6-2, 4-6, 2-6 to Emerson Vehelle and Grayden Cowhy at second doubles; Sal Fontana and Tristin Detwiler notched a 6-1, 6-3 third flight victory over Jared Rhein and Joseph Iriarte; plus Max Guerin and Pierce Murray dropped a 5-7, 3-6 verdict to Connor McClelland and Aiden Ridley.

Two days later, Imlay City tied visiting Sandusky in a non-league clash.

In individual action, Lengemann netted a 6-2, 6-3 top flight win; Wetzel secured a 5-7, 6-4, 10-7 victory at second singles; Schriber posted a 6-2, 6-1 third flight triumph; plus Joey Nerkowski registered a 6-1, 6-1win at fourth singles.

As far as doubles play was concerned, Alter and Dennis fell by a 1-6, 2-6 top flight count; Lindquist and DeClean dropped a 2-6, 6-3, 6-10 verdict at second doubles; Jeremy Schroeder and Fontana fell by a 3-6, 1-6 third flight count; plus Guerin and Murray dropped a 3-6, 6-1, 8-10 verdict at fourth doubles.
