Volleyball Roundup: Imlay City wins tournament; sweeps BWAC foe Armada
IMLAY CITY — The Imlay City varsity volleyball team went 4-0 en route to a first-place finish last Saturday at the SC4 Skipper Showcase in Port Huron.
Imlay City started things off with a 25-19, 25-20 win against St. Clair. They then completed pool play with a 25-18, 25-14 victory over Algonac. Those results netted Imlay City a spot in the Gold Bracket. It was there Imlay City registered a 25-23, 25-17 triumph against Marysville.
They then faced Cardinal Money for tournament honors. That battle drew to a close with Imlay City posting a 25-6, 25-19 win. Kendall Jones (48 assists) and Isabella O’Malley (27) handled the playmaking responsibilities for Imlay City that day. Mia-Ann Grapentin (25 kills), Mia Zepeda (23) and Evelyn Robertson (15) led Imlay City as far as kills were concerned. Lyla Russell (48), Roslyn Bruman (27), Zepeda (17) and O’Malley (13) generated Imlay City’s highest dig totals. Grapentin (seven), Millie Craven (three) along with O’Malley and Zepeda (one each) added Imlay City’s blocks.
Two days prior to that, Imlay City handed host Armada a 25-8, 25-19, 25-8 setback in a Blue Water Area Conference encounter. Jones (18 set assists) and O’Malley (14) were Imlay City’s offensive catalysts. Zepeda (14), Craven and O’Malley (seven each), Grapentin (five) and Roslyn Bruman (four) supplied Imlay City’s kills. Lyla Russell (15), Bruman (12), Zepeda (11) and Jones (five) provided Imlay City’s digs. Grapentin (three) and Craven (one) managed Imlay City’s blocks. Bruman (five), O’Malley (four), Jones (two) and Zepeda (one) added Imlay City’s ace serves.
Capac bests Mayville, outlasted by Memphis
CAPAC — The Capac varsity volleyball team saw to it they would prevail, obtaining a 25-19, 25-20, 20-25, 25-18 win against visiting Mayville in a Big Thumb Conference Blue Division varsity volleyball confrontation last Thursday night.
MaryBeth Klein directed Capac’s offense from her position at setter. She was credited with 12 assists. Liliana Uribe-Arce (seven) and Dellah Rodriguez (four) posted the top Capac kill totals. Ava Thorner provided Capac with 13 digs. Madelynn Dudley contributed six blocks to Capac’s cause. Capac also received six ace serves courtesy of Uribe-Arce.
Two days prior to that, Capac put up a good fight before falling 25-20, 18-25, 12-25, 25-23, 12-15 to host and league rival Memphis. For Capac, Chloe Tice led the way with a nine-dig performance. Dudley added four blocks to Capac’s cause.
Dryden falls to Kingston, Memphis
DRYDEN — Dryden fell 18-25, 14-25, 20-25 to Kingston in a Big Thumb Conference Blue Division varsity volleyball match last Tuesday.
Karley Phillips and Celine Nguyen led Dryden with five service points each. Elaina Yatros (three), Stori Zink (two) along with Abby Tonkoshkur and Kayla Lapka (one apiece) also registered service points for the Cardinals. Angelina Urick and Tonkoshkur added one block each to Dryden’s cause.
Two days later, Dryden dropped a 10-25, 15-25, 23-25 verdict to league counterpart Memphis in a contest at home. Yatros and Lapka headlined for Dryden that evening.
They contributed four and two aces, respectively.
Almont volleyball falls at Yale
YALE — Almont left Yale with a 26-24, 24-26, 15-25, 21-25 loss in Blue Water Area Conference volleyball action last Thursday night.
