Mary Louise “MaryLou” Camilla (Couckuyt) Worth-DeCou, 93

Mary Louise “MaryLou” Camilla (Couckuyt) Worth-DeCou, 93, left this earth peacefully on March 1, 2025. She was born in Detroit on November 15, 1931 to G. Camille and Margaret (Leuffgen) Couckuyt.

MaryLou spent her formative years in East Detroit attending St. Veronica School, East Detroit High School and Detroit Business University. Later in life she returned to school at Wayne State University, where she received a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Library Science, and an Educational Specialist Certificate. MaryLou worked for Capac Community Schools as a Certified Librarian and Sixth Grade teacher from 1976 until her retirement in 1993.

In 1951, MaryLou married Henry Worth. Together, they had four children: Greg (Barbara), Dave (Susan), Cindy, and Kathy (Rick), all of whom survive her. MaryLou and Henry lived in Capac where they loved to go dancing and play cards. After Henry passed away in 1979, she focused on her teaching career. In 1985, she married Tom DeCou in Port Huron. They had 39 years of happiness, cruising and wintering in Florida. Tom passed away in 2024.

She enjoyed crafting, gardening and genealogy. For many years she served as a 4-H leader and later enjoyed teaching crafts at senior communities. She was devoted to her family, and she stayed in touch regularly via text and social media, as well as a card for every occasion. She is fondly remembered by them for this and her famous Cherry Triangles.

In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, infant brother C. Herbert Couckuyt, and son-in-law William Dalgleish. She was also predeceased by her sisters-in-law Anna Piltz, Mary Scarberry, and Elizabeth Schavillie, with whom she was very close. In addition to her children, she is survived by grandchildren Amanda (Ryan), Ashley (John), Laura, Alexander (Noel), Lindsay, Jacob (Shannen), Caitlin, and Rebecca. She is also survived by 5 great-grandchildren, as well as loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family honors the memory of Mary and invites you to visit and share memories Thursday, March 6, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the 11:00 a.m. funeral service at Kaatz Funeral Directors, Capac. Fr. Mike Gawlowski will officiate. Burial will be in West Berlin Cemetery, Allenton, MI.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Capac Friends of the Library, 111 N. Main, Capac, MI, 48014. Please note in her memory.
