Mildred Simpkins, 84

Mildred Simpkins, age 84, of Imlay City, MI (formerly of Almont) passed away Monday, September 16, 2024, at Marlette United Hospice Residence of Marlette, MI. Mildred Ruth Kuhn was born March 25, 1940, in Almont, MI. She is the daughter of the late Edwin and the late Veda (Handley) Kuhn. Mildred grew up in Almont and was a 1957 graduate of Almont High School. Mildred continued her education at Elkhart University, earning her degree as a Dental Assistant and worked for Dr. Markey in Romeo.
She married the love of her life, James Simpkins, on October 1, 1961, at the First Congregational Church in Almont. Jim’s work for Chrysler moved them to Mississippi, where their daughters were born. In 1969, after surviving three hurricanes, they decided to move back to Almont to raise their family.
Mildred was a Girl Scout leader in Almont. She was very involved in the Almont Bicentennial committee and the development of the Almont Village Park. She was employed by Almont Community Schools, where she loved to get to know the students. She took great joy when students would recognize her, even years after she retired. Together, Mildred and Jim owned Jim’s TV and Mildred’s Income Tax Service.
She loved all kinds of crafts and was always working on something either with her hands or on her computer. Her Girl Scouts troops were privileged to have an arts and crafts project to do each week, thanks to Mildred’s countless hours of reading craft magazines and pulling together materials for her latest craft idea!
Mildred loved her husband, daughters and grandsons to the stars and back. She was greatly looking forward to having a granddaughter-in-law added to the family in September 2024. Mildred was so grateful that her grandsons found wonderful young ladies with which to share their lives.
Mildred is survived by her daughters, Michelle (Joe Raetz) Nadrowski of Imlay City, MI and Deb (Daniel) Davis of Belmont, MI; grandsons, Nicholas (Jessica) Davis and Shane (Katelynn Boening) Davis; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Simpkins; parents, Edwin and Veda Kuhn; and her brothers, Richard Kuhn and Norman Kuhn.
The family will be hosting a memorial service for Mildred on Sunday, October 20 at 1 p.m. at the Lions Club Pavilion at Almont Village Park. All are invited to attend and share their memories with the family.
The family was served by the wonderful staff at United Hospice Residence of Marlette and suggests memorial contributions in Mildred’s honor: United Hospice, 2770 Main Street, Marlette, MI 48453.
