Doug Steckly, 88

Doug Steckly, age 88, of Goodland Twp., Imlay City, MI died Friday, September 6, 2024, at McLaren Lapeer Region Hospital. Douglas David Steckly was born January 13, 1936 in Goodland Twp., MI. He was the son of the late David and the late Lucile (Kohler) Steckly. Doug grew up and lived his entire life in Goodland Township. He attended Cole Country School and was a graduate of Imlay City High School, Class of 1955. He married Alice Jean Penzien on July 14, 1962, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Imlay City, MI.
Doug was a self-employed farmer; Doug has operated his family’s farm all of his life raising beef cattle, milking cows, growing cash crops. He is the only farmer in the Imlay City area to be issued the FFA (Future Farmers of America) American Farmers Degree. In his younger years he also worked at assorted off-farm jobs in the winter months, including for the Post Office in Detroit driving mail between post offices and at Hamill Manufacturing in Imlay City. He drove the Goodland Township school bus taking students to Dryden Schools in the 1960s.
He was a Lapeer County Farm Bureau Board of Directors Trustee, a Lapeer County Federal Land Bank Board of Directors Trustee, a 4-H member and Leader, and a Goodland Township Board Trustee for 30 years.
Doug is survived by his wife, Alice Steckly; children, Daniel Steckly of Imlay City, MI, Beth (Michael) Eddy of Imlay City, MI, Diane (Barry) Ethridge of Imlay City, MI, and Roger Steckly of Imlay City, MI; grandchildren, Declan Steckly, Heather Gutzeit, Heidi (Demetrius) Johnson, Amy Miranda; great-grandchildren, Allison, Robert, Aiden; great-great-grandchildren, Easton and Kash.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents, David and Lucile Steckly; sister, Ola Belle Middlesworth; brothers-in-law Larry Penzien, Bernard Penzien, Lee Penzien; and sisters-in-law Dorothy Penzien and Jane Penzien.
The funeral service was held on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 200 N. Cedar St., Imlay City, MI. The Reverend Sharon Smith officiating.
