Almont AP history students taste world history

Mrs. Blum’s AP World History Students at Almont just finished a unit of study on the Golden Age of China, Dar-al Islam, and Mesoamerican civilizations in the Post-Classical period.

To celebrate and solidify their learning, the students participated in the first Culture and Cuisine Day.

Students tried champa rice, a staple food of Song China, Turkish delight, a sweet from the Seljuk Empire, and dates stuffed with almond and orange and covered in honey from Al-Andalus.

In addition, they tried green tea from China, Turkish black tea from the Seljuk Empire, mint tea from Al-Andalus, and chicha morada, a purple corn drink from the Incan Empire.

While students sampled the food and drink, they worked on their own version of a quipu, a series of knots that helped Incan officials keep track of trade.
