Larry Jay Smith, 88

Larry Jay Smith, affectionately known as “Chucky”, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2026, following a long illness. He was 88 years old.

Larry was born on August 25, 1937, in Mount Clemens, Michigan, to Leon Joshua and Mary Ellen (née Curtis) Smith. He grew up in the Schoenherr and Canal area – then part of Utica, now Sterling Heights before later moving to Imlay City, where he graduated from Imlay City High School.

A hardworking and skilled man, Larry held various jobs throughout his life, most notably working as an engineer for General Dynamics for over ten years. During his time there, he helped design and build devices intended to keep airplanes from crashing during landing – work he took pride in knowing it helped protect lives.

Larry also served his country honorably in the United States Army. One of his favorite stories, which he shared with great pride, was that he once guarded Elvis Presley during his military service.

A man of faith, Larry was a longtime and devoted member of Brookside Missionary Baptist Church. In his younger years, he enjoyed bowling, fishing and hunting, and he especially loved spending time outdoors. Family trips “up north” to the cabin in West Branch held special meaning for him, and he had a deep affection for Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

In later years, Larry enjoyed playing cards, visiting casinos and trying his luck as an avid lottery player. To those who knew him best, he was steady, kind and genuine.

Larry is survived by his brother, Kenneth (Merion) Smith; his nephews, Roger Smith and Randy (Tina) Smith; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Mary Ellen Smith, his 12 siblings, Marian, Walter, George, Calvin, Bob, Wesley, Lindy, Edith, Evelyn, Ethel, Jean, and Iva; and his longtime friend, Bill Linden.

A viewing will be held on Monday, February 16, 2026, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Brookside Missionary Baptist Church, 52203 Mound Road, Shelby Township, Michigan 48316; (586) 739-5438.

A funeral service will commence at 5:00 p.m. with dinner to follow in the church fellowship hall.
