Paving set to begin on N. Blacks Corners

Work slated to last three weeks, weather dependent

 

IMLAY CITY — More road construction will be taking place in Imlay City, following the Labor Day weekend.

Earlier in the construction season, crews spent several weeks on rebuilding a portion of Fourth St. in Imlay City.

Now, the focus turns to a section of road on the west side of town, north of where the Polly Ann Trail begins.

According to Imlay City DPW Supervisor Ed Priehs, if the weather cooperates the work should be completed within a three week window.

“After the Labor Day weekend, the City of Imlay City will begin road construction on N. Blacks Corners Rd. from W. Fourth St. to the north city limits, near Cambridge Lane,” he said.

Priehs continued to explain the project by saying, “This section of road will be closed to thru traffic. A detour route will be posted.”

Accoding to the city, the planned detour for southbound N. Blacks Corners Rd. is Imlay City Rd. to N. Almont Ave. to W. Fourth St. The opposite route applies for north bound traffic.

The City of Imlay City received a Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Transportation Economic Development Fund (TEDF) Category B Grant that will contribute to half of the construction costs.

The project includes cold milling the existing asphalt pavement, and resurfacing from W. Fourth St. to Attica Rd. From Attica Rd. to Cambridge Ln, the existing pavement will be pulverized, and crush and shaped for the new road base, followed by installing new asphalt.

Some minor ditching is also included. Weather permitting, Priehs said the entire project should last approximately three weeks.

Imlay City continues to work on street improvements as funding allows. During the Fourth St. project, construction crews replaced outdated infrastructure, including wooden water pipes.

Priehs said the project has an estimated cost of $379,000 with the City being responsible for 50% of the total costs. The project will cover about a half mile.
