Five-alarm fire in Goodland Twp. Monday destroys home

GOODLAND TWP. — A mid-afternoon house fire in Goodland Twp. Monday brought firefighters from five area departments to the scene on Lyons Rd., east of M-53.

Smoke from the burning home could be seen from miles away, prior to the arrival of the first fire units.

Fire units from Goodland Twp., Imlay City, Arcadia Twp., Attica Twp. and Brown City responded to the scene.

Persistent winds proved to be a challenge to firefighters battling the blaze. The home is believed to be a total loss from fire, smoke and water damage.

According to neighbors at the scene, the home had been renovated extensively, having been converted from an old farmhouse.

On a social media post following the fire, Goodland Township Fire Chief Brian Kinzer lauded the work of the department’s members and firefighters from neighboring departments that provided mutual aid.

“We had a structure fire this afternoon on Lyons Rd. Please keep the family in your thoughts as they deal with this tragedy in their lives. I want to say a huge ‘Thank You’ to our mutual aid partners that responded. We could NOT have done this without you. Imlay City Fire Department, Arcadia Township Fire Department, Attica Township Fire Department and Brown City Fire Department. Also Lapeer County EMS for standing by checking on all involved.”

He went on to say, “Also our crew worked extremely hard to battle the fire in some tough conditions. It’s hard to put into words how proud I am of this team. They all worked together, with our neighboring departments, to extinguish the fire and then went back and cleaned up equipment not only to leave and follow up with their lives. I hope this community appreciates them as much as I do.” — Chief Kinzer.
