Less time to play, daydream or invent

Dear Editor,

What a great question: “What is it we want from technology?” We spent a good part of this weekend talking about this.

You asked this because you all had some worries. Even though our engineers, scientists, builders, etc. can do amazing things with it, maybe much of it doesn’t suit us. It sure hasn’t “gone down smooth”. Too fast, too confusing, too much.

You asked what is it “we want” from technology, I’m thinking a lot of “technology wants us,” “wants us to want it,” …maybe even “own us.”

Technology is a powerful tool and we can use it to make our world and lives safer, healthier, etc. But we’ve got to ask (like you did) what might it do to us. How is it impacting our lives and what is it erasing from our lives? Are we losing control to strangers behind our screens? Are we having less face to face interactions where our bodies, minds, spirits, and hearts can be recognized? Are we having less time to play, daydream, invent, think?
