The Almont Legacy Project

Dear Editor,

Have you ever longed to hold in your hands a letter from those who came before you—a treasured message carried across generations, revealing what they witnessed, what hardships they endured, what hopes they cherished, and what dreams they wished to pass on to the future?  

You may not have a letter like this from the past, but in the coming month, you have the chance to add your own voice to that living chain of memory. You are invited to write a Legacy Letter for future generations who may one day wonder who we were, what life was like in Almont, and what mattered most to us in this important moment.  

Almont Homecoming volunteers are pleased to launch this special community project, collecting Legacy Letters from individuals, families, students, businesses, churches, clubs, and organizations connected to Almont in 2026. 

Together, these letters will preserve our memories, stories, hopes, challenges, traditions, and everyday experiences, creating a meaningful snapshot of life today for those who come after us.

More than a writing project, this is a gift to the future, shared during a historic year as we celebrate both our nation’s 250th birthday and Almont’s Community Homecoming. 

The Legacy Letters will become part of the 2026–2076 Community Time Capsule. Written on archival paper, they will be buried during the Almont Community Homecoming Celebration on August 15 and preserved for future generations. Public participation is welcome, though space in the time capsule may be limited. 

To participate, email your full name and the type of letter you would like to submit—Family, Community Resident, History/Heritage, or Club/Organization—to almontlegacyletters@gmail.com. Each participant will receive one archival-quality letter sheet for their submission.

Archival envelopes without adhesive will also be provided, and each letter will be placed in a protective archival sleeve for preservation in the time capsule. 

Because these letters are meant to remain underground for 50 years, some instructions may be more detailed than expected. These guidelines help ensure the letters are properly preserved and can be read and enjoyed by future generations when the capsule is opened in 2076. 

Below is a brief overview of the letter types listed above. 

Family Legacy Letters include guided questions about family life in 2026, along with messages from parents or guardians to their children and from children to their future selves.

These letters are intended to be returned to the designated recipients when the time capsule is opened in 2076. 

Community Resident Letters. These letters may be written by current residents, alumni, and community members who wish to share memories, reflections, and hopes for Almont’s future.

When the time capsule is  opened in 2076, the letters may either be returned to a designated recipient or shared with the Almont Historical Society, depending on the author’s preference. 

History and Heritage Letters. These letters are meant to preserve historical stories, memories, and generational connections to Almont.

When the time capsule is opened in 2076, they will become part of the Almont Historical Society archives, helping protect and share the community’s historical record. 

Community Organization Letters.     

Local clubs, businesses, schools, and organizations are invited to reflect on their role in the Almont community in 2026. These letters are intended to preserve a historical snapshot of the organizations serving Almont at that time. When the time capsule is opened, they will become part of the Almont Historical Society archives. 

The letter submission deadline is Saturday, August 1, 2026. Participants are encouraged to return completed letters as soon as possible to the Almont District Library or the Almont Historical Society. For questions, please email almontlegacyletters@gmail.com.
