IC school district placed in modified lockdown following low-level threat

Suspect not a student; apprehended by police

IMLAY CITY — Imlay City school officials are working with the Imlay City Police Department Friday morning, following what Supt. Dr. Stu Cameron called a low-level threat in one of the district’s buildings.

Shortly after 10:30 a.m., Dr. Cameron posted the following message on the district Facebook page.

10:35 a.m. Friday

Supt. Dr. Stu Cameron wrote:

ICS Families:

Due to what is currently considered a low-level threat directed at 2 specific students at ICHS (i.e. NOT a school-wide threat), and out of an abundance of caution, I have placed the district in modified secure mode until further notice.

The parents of any involved/identified students at ICHS have been contacted. The individual responsible for the threatening statement has been identified, is not an ICS student, and police have been dispatched to his residence.

During a period of modified secure mode, students engage in their typical daily activities within buildings, however, students are not allowed to exit the buildings.

Additionally, an increased adult presence is employed. Again, out of an abundance of caution, our School Resource Officer has arranged for additional police officers from the ICPD to monitor the ICS campus until this situation has been fully resolved.

We are actively monitoring this situation, and if any further action is warranted and appropriate, I will send additional information out to parents.

10:45 a.m.

In a follow-up message from the Imlay City police department, attached to the school’s message, authorities said, “The person of interest has been apprehended and there is no threat to our schools. Thank you for your understanding and we will release more information when we are able to.”

11:05 a.m.

Dr. Cameron issued yet another statement saying he had given the all clear.

“I am happy to report that I have issued an “all clear,” and the schools have been placed back into normal operations. Due to the vigilance of school administrators, reporting students, and especially the Imlay City Police, the individual responsible for threatening two of our ICHS students is in police custody and this situation has been resolved.
