IMLAY CITY — In a time when recruiting new firefighters is difficult, at best, the Imlay City Fire Department is losing over three decades of knowledge and experience with the retirement of Craig Ross.
The Imlay City Fire Department recently announced the retirement of Firefighter Ross, recognizing more than 32 years of dedicated service to their department and the community.
Ross joined the department in 1994 as a firefighter. According to Chief Keith Klobucar. The commitment, work ethic and leadership abilities by Ross quickly earned him promotions through the ranks.
He became a Lieutenant in 1997, Assistant Chief in 2000, and served as Acting Fire Chief in 2001.
According to Chief Klobucar, life brought unexpected challenges, including a courageous battle with cancer, which interrupted his career progression and ultimately led him to return to the role of firefighter.
Throughout those difficult years, Ross remained committed to the department whenever his health allowed, demonstrating the same determination and resilience that defined his career, Chief Klobucar said.
“His leadership has been a source of pride for the Imlay City Fire Department throughout his service. His passion for the fire service has never wavered, and the experience he gained serving in nearly every position within the department made him a respected mentor and informal leader,” the Chief said.
“His fellow firefighters admire his willingness to have difficult conversations, his unwavering integrity, and his deep commitment to the true meaning of brotherhood.”
Ross’ dedication, passion, mentorship, and leadership have been recognized many times throughout his career. He was honored as the Imlay City Fire Department's Firefighter of the Year in both 2013 and 2023, and his service has also been recognized by the Lapeer County Firefighters Association as "Firefighter of the Year” in 2014.
Most recently, Ross was selected by his fellow firefighters and fire officers as the recipient of the Imlay City Fire Department's 2023 Firefighter of the Year Award.
This honor is awarded to a department member whose outstanding service, years of dedication and contributions exemplify the highest standards of the fire service.
As Ross begins his well-earned retirement, the department extends their sincere gratitude for his decades of faithful service, leadership, mentorship and friendship.
Chief Klobucar concluded, “His impact on the Imlay City Fire Department will be felt for many years to come, and the example he set will continue to inspire future generations of firefighters.”
Congratulations, Craig, on an outstanding career and a well-deserved retirement.
The department extends their thanks for his service to the department, his fellow firefighters and the citizens of Imlay City.
“We wish you and your family good health, happiness and many blessings in the years ahead,” Klobucar said.
