Memorandum full of misinformation

On March 2, Dr. Remington Nevin, St. Clair County’s controversial Medical Director, issued a memorandum full of misinformation that recommended municipalities discontinue the addition of fluoride to drinking water.

Dr. Nevin is a peddler of conspiracy theories, who, until recently, made his living as an expert witness in lawsuits against the government, asserting that anti-malarial drugs given to soldiers can cause symptoms that can be mistaken for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). He was hired by the County Board of Commissioners in 2023 after two other medical directors resigned and/or declined the position.

As many people are aware, Dr. Nevin forced the closure of the Yale and Capac teen clinics, leading to the loss of a $180,000 grant that supported them, and he has also recently directed that the Health Department would no longer support the Port Huron High School teen clinic. He is actively discouraging vaccinations in our county and has said that the Michigan Department of Health is “full of degenerates” and what’s taking place there “is evil.”

He is a disciple of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and does not seem to understand basic science. He speaks and writes with seeming authority, but there is very little true science behind his assertions. He appears to be intent on destroying our Public Health Department. Many grievances have been filed against him for unprofessional behavior toward Health Department staff and citizens.

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that has been proven for decades to prevent cavities and improve public health. Yes, it would be toxic in excessive amounts, but so is almost any other mineral or drug. It is added to drinking water in very small, safe amounts.
