Incident at Capac Elementary remains under investigation

No lockdown in classrooms; no evidence of weapons

 

CAPAC — Law enforcement and school administration continues their investigation into an incident Friday that caused some anxious moments in the school district late last week.

Supt. Amy Nelson said there was an incident involving a special needs student with early reports being there was a possible weapon involved.

However, Monday morning, Supt. Nelson issued a districtwide letter to parents, notifying them of the situation.

She also clarified, “The disruption to instruction happened in a classroom at the end of the school day on Friday. ”No ‘lockdown’ was activated per district policy.”

In her letter sent out Monday, Supt. Nelson wrote:

“Hello Capac Parents,

We are aware that there has been increased conversation in the community regarding an incident that occurred last week involving an elementary student.

On Friday, Ms. Hall communicated directly with the families of students who were most directly involved.

I want to share a brief update with our broader school community to help ensure that accurate information is being communicated.

The student involved has special needs, and the outburst that occurred is related to that student’s disability.

At this time, there is no evidence that the student has access to any weapons.

Out of an abundance of caution, the student will not be in school today while the district completes a full investigation into additional allegations that have surfaced.

Please know that student and staff safety is always our highest priority.

After reviewing the situation, the district has determined that our schools are safe and that it is appropriate for schools to remain in session today.

Because the matter initially involved a limited number of students, communication on Friday was directed to the families and staff most directly affected.

The student was also removed from the school environment pending the investigation, which is why broader communication was not issued at that time.

We understand that situations like this can lead to concern and speculation. We respectfully ask our community to avoid spreading rumors or unverified information, as doing so can unintentionally cause additional stress for students and families and interfere with the investigative process.

The district will continue to investigate the matter thoroughly and will take any appropriate steps based on the findings.

Capac Police Chief Carlo Dealca said his department responded to the school, after receiving a phone call.

“On Friday, March 6, 2026 at approximately 1700 hrs, our department received a phone call from OK2SAY regarding a possible threat that came from a student at Capac Elementary.

Capac Elementary Principal, Shannon Hall was advised of the threat and informed us that she is aware of the incident and is conducting an investigation.”

Chief Dealca went on to say, “An officer responded to the students residence and made contact with a parent. The student does not have access to any firearms. The school is currently trying to determine their next course of action.”

All classes were held as scheduled on Monday.
