Kempf inducted to Fair Hall of Fame

MANCHESTER, MI — The Michigan Association of Fairs and Exhibitions (MAFE) is proud to announce that Ian Kempf, General Manager of the Eastern Michigan State Fair in Imlay City, has been selected as a 2026 inductee into the Michigan Association of Fairs and Exhibitions Hall of Fame.

The honor is the association’s most prestigious and selective honor bestowed on leaders whose influence has shaped and elevated the fair industry in Michigan.

The MAFE Hall of Fame Award recognizes an elite group of individuals whose visionary leadership, sustained excellence, and transformative contributions have fundamentally advanced fairs, festivals, and agricultural exhibitions across the state.

Hall of Fame inductees are distinguished by decades of impact, industry innovation, mentorship, and a legacy of strengthening community engagement through fairs that celebrate Michigan’s agricultural heritage and rural life.

State Association of Fairs officials say Kempf’s induction acknowledges over 28 years of exemplary service and leadership that have had lasting and far-reaching effects on Michigan’s fair community.

Since taking the helm of the Eastern Michigan State Fair in 1998, Kempf has guided the fair through a remarkable turnaround from financial uncertainty to long-term sustainability and growth.

Under his leadership the fair’s attendance and community relevance have steadily increased, and the event has become a vibrant hub for agricultural education, youth engagement, and family entertainment.

In addition to his contributions at the Eastern Michigan State Fair, Kempf has been a highly respected and active leader within MAFE.

He currently serves as President on the MAFE Board of Directors and has chaired key industry committees, including governance, compliance, education, and industry best practices – roles that reflect his peers’ confidence in his strategic vision and deep understanding of the fair industry.

His influence extends well beyond the fairgrounds. Mr. Kempf has dedicated many years to public service as a Lapeer County Commissioner.

His civic leadership, service club involvement, and community partnerships further reinforce his lifelong commitment to community enrichment and civic engagement.

The 2026 Hall of Fame induction took place during the Michigan Association of Fairs and Exhibitions Annual Convention on January 9 at the Amway Grand Plaza in Grand Rapids.

Kempf was formally recognized among his peers, colleagues, and close friends from across the industry at the convention.

Founded in 1885, the Michigan Association of Fairs and Exhibitions represents agricultural fairs, festivals, and exhibitions statewide, promoting education, advocacy, and excellence within the fair industry.
