Imlay City man critically injured in crash

Brown City Rd closed four hours for investigation

 

GOODLAND TWP. — An Imlay City man sustained critical injuries in a two-vehicle crash last week in Goodland Twp.

According to the Lapeer County Sheriff Dept., emergency personnel responded to the area of Brown City Rd. and Kohler Rd. after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a crash.

On Thursday, December 11, Lapeer County 911 dispatched Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies to an injury traffic collision that occurred on Brown City Road north of Kohler Road in Imlay City (Lapeer County’s Goodland Township) just before 6 p.m.

Deputies determined a 33-year-old male from Imlay City was traveling south on Brown City Road operating a 2022 Chevrolet Equinox.

Deputies say the vehicle approached a southbound 1997 Stewart Steven military style vehicle hauling agricultural crops driven by a 31-year-old male, also from Imlay City.

The Stewart Steven had operational rear taillights and a reflective slow-moving vehicle sign (deemed appropriate for use).

Investigators say the Equinox struck the back of the Stewart Steven. The Equinox traveled beneath the cargo bed of the Stewart Steven and eventually separated.

The Equinox departed the right side of the roadway and struck a tree. The Stewart Steven came to rest within the southbound lane.

Goodland Township Fire responded to extricate the driver (seat belt used with airbag deployment) and lone occupant of the Equinox.

Crews from Lapeer County EMS transported the victim to McLaren Lapeer and later transferred him from McLaren Lapeer to Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak where he remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The 31-year-old male driver of the Stewart Steven was not injured.

Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies were assisted at the scene by Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Goodland Township Fire Department, Lapeer County EMS Ambulance Service, and Lapeer County Reconstruction Team.

The roadway was closed for investigation and wreckage cleanup until approximately 10 p.m.

This traffic crash remains under investigation by Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies and the Lapeer County Reconstruction Team.

Preliminary investigation has not determined if either intoxication, excessive speeds, or environmental conditions are contributing factors.
