Almont knocks off Marine City

ALMONT — Almont saw to it that their season would continue, earning a 27-0 win against Marine City in a Division 6 district championship confrontation last Friday night.

With the decision, Almont (11-0) advances to a regional title game this Friday where it will host Detroit Edison (9-2) That matchup lists a 7 p.m. starting time. Marine City wraps up a 7-4 campaign.

“I thought our boys played well tonight,” Almont Coach James Leusby commented. “Coach John Forti’s defense was locked in and our offense executed well,” he noted.

“We will need a great week of practice if we want to bring home a regional championship.”

In Friday’s confrontation, Almont jumped out to a 6-0 advantage after one quarter was done.

The middle two quarters saw Almont generate eight total points and Marine City manage none, increasing their cushion to 14-0.

They then outscored Marine City 13-0 the rest of the way, assuring themselves of a favorable 27-0 verdict.

Almont produced their winning 27-point total aided by a Brody Corneau 67-yard touchdown run; a Matthew Bacholzky 14-yard touchdown run (followed by a Bacholzky PAT tote); a Jacob Stewart 10-yard touchdown run (followed by a successful extra point kick courtesy of Sean O’Neil); and a Bacholzky one-yard touchdown run.

For the night, Lane completed two of three pass plays for 39 yards as Almont’s quarterback. He threw zero interceptions along the way.

His successful tosses went to two targets. Their ranks consisted of Logan Schapman (one catch for 27 yards) and Bacholzky (one reception for 12 yards).

The Almont ground attack wound up with 346 yards on 36 totes.

Stewart (12 rushes for 168 yards), Corneau (127 yards on 10 totes) and Bacholzky (eight rushes for 63 yards) proved Almont’s toughest players to stop. The remaining six Raider totes netted a combined two-yard loss.

Cohen Ferqueron (six solos and 17 assists) and Bacholzky (five solos and six assists) generated Almont’s highest tackle totals. Colten Karbel (two solos and six assists), Gordon Stolecki (six assists) and Dominic Medley (four assists) made their whereabouts felt as well.
