Two new tenants for former Shopko building

 

IMLAY CITY — Following action taken by the Imlay City Planning Commission at their October 28 meeting, the path has been cleared for a new business to locate in a portion of the former Shopko building at the intersection of Newark Rd. and S. Van Dyke.

Family Farm & Home, who has a similar business just eight miles down the road in Almont, will be moving in to the southern half of the former Shopko building with plans to open in early 2026.

Co-President and Chief Operating Officer, Bob Tarrant was at the meeting and expressed a strong desire for the Imlay City location.

“We’ve had our eye on the Imlay City location for some time,” he said. “We have another facility just down the road in Almont and we really like the location of the Imlay City store.”

Plans call for the Imlay City business to have 30,000 square feet of retail space as well as seasonal outdoor retail items.

When asked by a Planning Commission member if the Almont location would remain open, Tarrant said plans are for the Almont store to stay open.

At the meeting, preliminary plans were discussed for the outside of the building, including loading and unloading areas where semi-trucks would bring product.

The new farm store will be the second such business in close proximity to each other, with Tractor Supply being located in a plaza southwest of Family Farm & Home.

After the meeting with the planning commission, Tarrant said the company would be putting out a press release with more information as they get closer to opening the new Imlay City location.

According to their website, Family Farm & Home is a family owned and operated company based in West Michigan. Their first stores opened in Michigan in 2002.

In the 20 years since, they have grown to have over 70 store locations across five states, including Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Ivan Ammori, owner of the sprawling building, confirmed Planet Fitness will be utilizing 15,000 square feet of space on the north end of the building while Family Farm & Home will occupy 30,000 square feet to the south.
