Entitled to opinion, but not her version of the truth

Dear Editor:

In last week’s edition a letter opposed Donald Trump. The writer is entitled to her own opinion but not her own facts. She got the following wrong:

• No police officers died because of Jan. 6th. Officer Sicknick of the Capitol Police died the following day of natural causes; multiple strokes that occurred after the events of Jan. 6.

• Trump believes he won. That belief may be wrong but belief is different than knowledge.

• Can you quote the exact language of Trump where he asked citizens to overthrow our government? The answer is NO because it did not take place.

• Inflation: The rate was 0.1% in May of 2020. When Biden/Harris took office in 2021 the rate was 1.4%. It climbed to 9.1% year over year in June 2022, the highest increase in 40 years. The average yearly inflation under Biden/Harris is 5.7%. It continues today at a level significantly higher than it was during the Trump years.

• Unemployment was at 3.5% in February 2020, before the pandemic lockdown took place. It peaked at 14.8% and then dropped back to 3.5% by December 2022. It is now at about 4.3%.

• Wages for the average worker, when adjusted for inflation, have not increased since Biden/Harris took office. Yet grocery prices are up 23%, insurance costs up over 30%, housing costs up nearly 20% costing the average home buyer about $13,300 more for the same house compared to 2021. Gasoline prices went from about $2.32/gallon under Trump to close to $5.00 under Biden and now are still about 50% higher than under Trump.

• There were about 10 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. when Biden became president. This 10 million was from all prior presidents. That number has more than doubled in just 4 years of the Biden/Harris administration.

• The Supreme Court reversed the Roe v Wade decision because it was bad constitutional law. Even Ruth Bader Ginsburg, an avowed liberal and pro-abortion judge, admitted it was poorly decided. There was no such “right” as a “right to abortion.” It was simply a “made up right” by the Supreme Court when it decided Roe v Wade. Now the issue is exactly where it should be. In the hands of the people. Each state can decide via its legislature or by ballot what policy it wishes to implement. Michigan has decided in favor of unlimited abortion at any time for any reason. Other states have other views. That is how it should be.

• We do not have a “pure democracy.” We have a representative democracy where the majority rules subject to certain protections for the minority.
