Candidates should really try a little harder

I’ve been following politics since Eisenhower’s second run. Seems the nurses at Chicago Children’s Hospital thought the Republican Convention was more entertaining than soap operas.

Even as a tyke, I had to agree. Folks marching around in silly hats, waving signs and chanting was just so darn fascinating.

This year, at least in Lapeer County, has been the lamest political season I’ve ever seen.

Last time out a few folks knocked on my door trying to convince me to vote for them. A few more sent out glossy postcards making their pitch.

This year? A smattering of yard signs and pretty much bupkis.

No mailers, no knocks at the door and worse yet, no candidates’ nights. Political ads have been slim to none in the local papers and the candidates’ profiles came out after early voting had started.

Worse yet, a few candidates made pitches on social media and when I asked them to explain themselves further, they got testy. Apparently, they didn’t realize an election is an extended job interview, not a christening.

The folks who got offended being questioned didn’t get my vote. If a potential employee has a crappy attitude during the job interview, imagine how they’re going to work out once you hire them.

In this county, at least locally, the primary is the election since one party doesn’t even try any more.

Hopefully, next time out folks who want those local jobs will try just a little harder.
