Author shares view point on Presidential election

Here we are again with two Presidential candidates, one at each end of the political spectrum. One is an old worn-out conman–the first convicted felon to run for the highest office in our land. Trump did ascend to the highest office in the land 8 years ago; his performance related to campaign promises was less than stellar, dismal is a better descriptor… He promised us a wall, he delivered 200 miles on an 1800-mile border. The wall was poorly designed; babies were being dropped over the wall. A $50 battery-powered saw would cut a hole in the wall big enough for you and your horse. Trump promised lower drug costs–the only reduction in drug costs was for diabetes medication insulin, that was achieved by the current administration not Trump. During the 2016 Campaign Trump was asked would he control spending and reduce the national debt, he said it would be easy to reduce the debt (he increased it 39%). Trump said that trade wars were easy to win, and he would reduce our annual trade deficit. The trade deficit increased during his administration. Another of his campaign promises which he did keep was a huge tax cut that resulted in hundreds of newly minted billionaires created in the past 8 years. Now that tax cut is due to expire next year if Trump is not returned to the White House as our felon and chief.

This time around our wanna be felon and chief is making campaign promises of a much different nature. “If I am not re-elected there will be a blood bath.” If you re-elect me, you will never have to vote again. He wants to be a dictator for a day, allowing him to extract some level of revenge from individuals he believes wronged him. Trump talks about retribution for his conviction in New York with a new fervor. During an interview with Sean Hannity, Trump told him “I would have every right to go after them.”

He refuses to accept election results unless he wins. He refuses to acknowledge evidence of climactic change. Insurance premiums for all homeowners were raised drastically by insurance companies due to weather extremes around our country.

You must ask yourself how firm is this man’s grasp of reality? The fact checkers are wondering is he dumb enough to believe the untruths he is spouting at rallies and interviews, or does he believe were dumb enough to believe him? To provide Trump more power than any president in the past 250 years, the Supreme Court defied the Constitution by inventing the need for almost total immunity for presidents from all laws–opening the door to autocracy and oppression for generations to come. Do you believe an ex president, who has been convicted of a felony and is on trial for attempting to overthrow an election and our government, should be given total immunity if re-elected?

Trump and his party labeled the Democratic nominee for president a socialist. She may well be. At the end of the next term, who would be easier to evict from the Whitehouse, a socialist, or a felon who wants to be a be dictator who orchestrated an attempted insurrection to remain in the Whitehouse?

I believe the party should have supported Nikki Haley; but she shot herself in the foot with her talk of term limits. Most of these congressmen could not hold a job in the private sector and command the salary and benefits we afford them.

We are leaving our grandchildren with a staggering national debt. The least we can do is leave them our democracy intact. Generations grew up, raised their families, and retired enjoying the protection of this democracy, many of our loved ones died defending it. We would be poor stewards of the great American Experiment if we let it die on our watch. It would be ironic if our democracy died in the voting booth, not on a battlefield!
