New ICPD officer hired and on duty

Paving work continues throughout Imlay City

 

IMLAY CITY — It didn’t take long for the Imlay City Police Department to find a replacement for a recent retiring officer.

At the June 18 city commission meeting, Police Chief Brett Selby informed the board the department had found it’s man.

Aaron Eckhout is the newest member of the PD and was introduced at last week’s meeting by Chief Selby.

“We had one officer retire and another hired all within 24 hours,’ Chief Selby reported to the commission. “We are pleased and excited to have Aaron with us. He is going to do a great job.”

A law enforcement veteran of over 20 years, Eckhout comes to Imlay City after most recently serving in the City of Burton. He is a high school graduate of St. Clair Shores South Lake and graduated from the Macomb Police Academy in 2010.

“I’m looking forward to working here in Imlay City,” the newly hired officer told the commission. “It is closer to my home, so the commute is better and I feel like I thrive in communities such as Imlay City. I am thankful for the opportunity.”

Eckhout was officially sworn in to duty by city hall office staff on June 7.

In other commission news, members were given an update on the 4th St. project from a representative with Spicer.

The board was told the project continued to progress ahead of schedule and should be done (except for traffic control marking) before the Fourth of July, depending on the weather.

Late last week, crews put the first layer of asphalt down on 4th St., just before heavy rains delayed them for a short time.

The new curb, gutter and asphalt caps a multi-week project of replacing water and sewer lines along several blocks of 4th St.

Paving crews were scheduled to begin a series of other street resurfacing projects in Imlay City as of Monday of this week.

Imlay City Chamber of Commerce Director Chris Bishop asked the commission for a couple of special event permits pertaining to Summer Fest.

“I’m really excited about this year’s Summer Fest,” she said. “We have quite a few new things planned and have made some changes, including parking, after receiving feedback last year.” The patriotic-themed event will have more vendors and kids activities.
