Capac Supt. cancels remainder of girls’ season

CAPAC — When the high school girls’ state basketball playoffs get underway next week there will be one team hailing from the Tri-City Area absent from the field. That is because a decision has been made to call off the remainder of the season for Capac’s squad.

Capac won their final game 24-22 against Vassar in a GTC crossover matchup last Thursday at home, improving to 4-14 overall.

The following day it was announced that it would be the team’s last game this season.

That decision was explained to the team’s parent’s and guardians in a letter dated Friday, February 23 from Capac Interim Superintendent Amy Nelson.

The contents of the letter reads as follows:

“DearParents/Guardian,

I am writing to keep you informed about some decisions that have been determined regarding the Capac Girls’ Varsity Basketballs season.

As of today, Friday, February 23, the girls’ season has come to a close.

It has recently come to my attention that the girls and coach (Nate) Minnoy have experienced some situations, this season, that they feel have inhibited their ability to experience their full potential for success as a team.

At this time they have elected to take a stand regarding these situations and have decided to end their season at this time.

Although I am disheartened by this decision I support our girls and coach Minnoy in the choice they feel is best for them as individuals and as a team.

I will be in contact with the appropriate individuals at MHSAA to communicate the frustrations that have been shared with me.

I have also encouraged the girls to write letters to representatives at MHSAA that I can forward to individuals in leadership positions within the organization.

It is my sincere hope that this experience will provide a learning opportunity for our girls that they can reflect on positively in the future.

It is also my hope that we can communicate with members of leadership within the league to impact positive change for the future.
