Almont girls excel at regionals

ALMONT — The Almont girls’ track squad garnered a third-place finish last Saturday at a Division 3 regional in Bad Axe.

The top-two placewinners in each event plus anyone who meets or surpasses a state set time, height or distance advances to the state finals June 4 at Kent City.

Reese topped the standings with 189.5 points. They were followed by Caro (109), Almont (91.5), Millington (52), Bad Axe (43), Vassar (35.5), Cass City (30.5), Richmond and Pigeon-Laker (27.5 each), Algonac (27), Brown City (11), Lakeville (eight) and New Haven (three). Molleigh Rinke, discus, 105 feet 3 inches; plus Devin Johnston, 100 (12.66 seconds) and 200-meter (a school record-setting clocking of 25.49 seconds, eclipsing the previous mark of 25.6 seconds set by Ashley Bly during the 2004 season); led Almont with individual event firsts.

The Almont 400 relay of Paige Feldman, Montserrat Coronel, Lilylynn Martin and Johnston took first as well. They were timed in 53.45 seconds.

Feldman, high jump, 4 feet 8 inches; provided Almont with a second.

Ella Cichewicz, shot put, 31 feet 3/4 inches; notched the lone Almont individual event third.

The Almont 3200-meter relay of Ayla DeLaurier, Haley Dempz, Molly Kline and Martin pulled up third as well. They were timed in 11:52.51.

Isabella Giannetti, pole vault, 7 feet 6 inches; furnished a fourth for Almont.

Coronel, long jump, 13 feet 6 inches; Cichewicz, discus, 80 feet 2 inches; Olivia Kwierant, 100, (19.46 seconds) and 300 hurdles (58.68 seconds) plus Kline, 3200-meter run, 13:27; generated Almont’s sixths.

Dempz, 400 dash, 1:08.87; and DeLaurier, 3200-meter run, 14:4:39.45; collected outright individual event sevenths for Almont.

The Almont 800 relay (Madison Niedermaier, Rylie Ferman, Christy Trusler and Dempz) and 1600-meter (Lauren Webster, Dempz, DeLaurier and Coronel) were seventh as well. They stopped the watch at 2:11.44 and 4:50.8, respectively.

Niedermaier, pole vault, 7 feet 6 inches; added a two-way tie for seventh to Almont’s cause.
