Imlay City considers millage renewal

Street and sidewalk improvements millage up

 

IMLAY CITY — The Imlay City commission was scheduled to discuss whether or not they wanted to pass a motion to place an expiring millage request on the ballot for August.

The commission met in regular session Tuesday night and one of the agenda items was a possible resolution, should the board decide they want to proceed with a renewal proposal.

The Ballot Proposal Resolution read: Whereas there is a continuing need for funding in order to provide street and sidewalk improvements within the City of Imlay City and; Whereas the Imlay City commission desires to submit to the electors the question of approving a renewal millage levy for street and sidewalk improvements; Now Therefore Be It Resolved the Imlay City commission hereby directs that a millage proposal be submitted to the electors of Imlay City on the question of raising money for street and sidewalk improvement purposes at the State Primary Election to be held on th e 4th day of August, 2026, subject to the Downtown Development Authority agreeing to opt out of any capture of the extra-voted millage.

The ballot wording reads: Shall the City of Imlay City be authorized to levy an amount not to exceed 2.5000 mills ($2.50 per $1,000 of taxable value) as a renewal of the millage rate that expires in 2026, against all property within the City of Imlay City for a period of eight years, 2027 through 2034 inclusive, with the funds to be used to fund street and sidewalk improvements within Imlay City; and shall the City levy such millage for said purpose, thereby raising in the first year of the renewal an estimated $364,000.

A portion of the funding over previous years has been used to do 36 “mill and overlay” projects in the city with another 14 set to go, should the millage request have a favorable outcome.

According to DPW Supervisor Ed Priehs, a number of sidewalk repair projects are slated for the upcoming season.

Two major projects are sidewalk replacement on S. Almont Ave. from Lynn Ct. to Weston St. and on Titus St., from Almont Ave. to Maple Vista.
