Spartans celebrate a 22-6 homecoming win

IMLAY CITY — The Imlay City varsity football team celebrated their homecoming with a 22-6 win at Algonac’s expense last Friday night.

With the decision, Imlay City moves to 2-3 and 1-3. Algonac slips to 1-4 and 0-4.

“It was a tough game, but a big win for homecoming,” Imlay City Coach Dave Brown commented. “We are continuing to improve and look forward to next week,” he noted.

In Friday’s matchup, Imlay City and Algonac ended the first quarter with zero points each.

Quarter two saw Imlay City generate eight points and Algonac manage none.

When the action resumed, Imlay City padded their cushion some. Aided by an 8-0 third quarter, the Spartans increased their cushion to 14-0.

The hosts then outscored Algonac 8-6 the rest of the way, finishing off a 22-6 victory.

Imlay City produced their winning 22-point total aided by a Brady Homer 11-yard touchdown run (followed by a Brady Homer PAT tote); a Brady Homer two-yard touchdown run; and a Brett Lestage eight-yard touchdown run (followed by a Brady Homer to Jovani Pena PAT pass).

For the night, Brady Homer completed 10 of 15 pass plays for 130 yards as Imlay City’s quarterback. He threw one interception along the way.

His successful tosses were distributed to six different targets. Their ranks consisted of Henry Schmidt (three catches for 49 yards), Lestage (two receptions for 31 yards), Daniel Rojas (two catches for 11 yards), Pena (one reception for 20 yards), Noah Graboyes (one catch for 14 yards) and Bryce Homer (one reception for five yards).

The Imlay City ground attack added 116 yards on 33 totes.

Rojas (14 rushes for 48 yards) and Brady Homer (46 yards on 13 totes) posted Imlay City’s top totals. The remaining six Spartan rushes netted a combined 22-yard gain.

Graboyes and Lestage (five each) registered Imlay City’s top tackle totals. Ethan Collins (four stops) supported their performances.

The Imlay City defense also registered three takeaways. Bryce Homer, Gavin Smith and Brady Homer (a fumble recovery apiece) furnished those.

Imlay City will aim to make it back-to-back wins this Friday when it entertains BWAC rival Richmond. That battle lists a 7 p.m. starting time.
