Mical “Mike” Allen Powers, 72
Mical “Mike” Allen Powers, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, educator, coach, mentor, and friend, was born August 10, 1954, in Almont, Michigan, to the late Lyle Allen and Joyce Ann (Whiteman) Powers.
He passed away on August 25, 2026, at the age of 72.
Throughout his life, Mike touched countless people with his vibrant personality, quick humor, love of music and sports, and, perhaps most importantly, his instinct to notice people, encourage them, and make sure they knew someone was in their corner.
Mike is survived by his wife, Janis, whom he married on August 14, 1982; his children, Torey Powers and Janaye Powers (Gary Beidleman); his cherished granddaughter, Sofia Beidleman; his brother, Patrick Powers; his sister, Kelly Powers; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Ronni Powers, and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joseph and Elizabeth Crosby.
Mike spent his early years in Imlay City before moving with his family to Brighton in 1967 when his father became principal of Brighton High School. A 1972 Brighton graduate, he attended Adrian College before transferring to Central Michigan University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Broadcasting. He later earned his teaching certificate and master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University. While working at Brighton State Bank, he met Janis, beginning a partnership that would span more than four decades.
In 1981, Mike returned to Imlay City to begin a long career as an educator — a role perfectly suited to his outgoing personality and genuine love for young people. He coached basketball, boys Little League, girls softball, volleyball, and girls golf, but his influence reached far beyond classrooms and playing fields.
Mike had a particular ability to notice the students who were struggling, overlooked, or simply needed someone to take a little more time with them. And Mike was willing to give that time. Whether through teaching, coaching, mentoring, or simply being present, he looked for the young people who needed additional support and made sure they received it.
The significance of that care became especially apparent as the years passed. Former students continued to recognize Mike long after leaving his classroom, returning years later to thank him for the role he had played in their lives. For many, he wasn’t simply a teacher they remembered. He was someone who had made them feel seen at a time when they needed it.
His students will also remember the smaller things that made him unmistakably Mike — including his love of Pepsi and the Pepsi he would give them as a special treat on their birthdays.
Of all the chapters of Mike’s life, none meant more to him than becoming a father. The greatest joys of Mike and Janis’ lives came through adoption when they welcomed their son, Torey, from South Korea in 1992 and their daughter, Janaye, from South Korea in 1994.
Mike took an active and deeply invested role in the lives of his children. Their interests became his interests, and much of his time as a father was devoted to making sure they had every opportunity to discover their talents and pursue the things they loved. He encouraged Torey’s creativity and love of music and supported Janaye as she pursued both music and athletics.
Golf became an especially meaningful part of the time Mike and Janaye shared. He devoted countless hours to helping her develop as a golfer, much of it spent together at Lum Golf Course in Attica. He later had the special opportunity to serve as an assistant coach for her team. Whether his children’s passion was athletic, musical, or creative, Mike believed in giving them the support to discover what they could do — and then helping them do it well.
Sports were woven throughout Mike’s life. A devoted University of Michigan fan, he faithfully followed his Detroit Pistons, Tigers, and Red Wings and enjoyed drafting and managing his own fantasy sports teams. Golf remained a lifelong love, but basketball brought with it a special kind of camaraderie. For approximately 20 years, Mike regularly played with the same group of friends. Those games became more than a way to stay active; they represented the competition, laughter, friendship, and community Mike valued throughout his life.
Music was equally important to him. Mike participated in choir and band, was an All-State tenor, played guitar by ear, and later shared his voice through the Lapeer County Community Choir. For many years he also worked as a DJ, providing the soundtrack for school events, former students’ weddings, and countless other celebrations. He volunteered with the Historical Society and was known for his humor, friendliness and ability to connect with nearly everyone he met.
Those who knew Mike knew that he was rarely one to fade quietly into the background.
He had a vibrant personality, an easy sense of humor and a gift for making people laugh. He loved bringing people together, whether through a classroom, a team, a song, a basketball game or simply a conversation. Mike’s life was, at its heart, one centered on people. He invested his time in them. As a teacher, he noticed the student who needed encouragement. As a coach, he helped young athletes develop. As a friend, he built relationships that lasted for decades. And as a father, he devoted himself to helping his children discover and pursue the things they loved.
Mike leaves behind far more than the record of the years he lived. He leaves behind the influence of a teacher whose students still remember him decades later, the friendships built over years on basketball courts and golf courses, music shared and enjoyed, laughter that filled rooms and children whose interests he made his own simply because they mattered to them.
His legacy lives in the countless people he encouraged, the young people he took the time to notice, and the family he spent his life loving and supporting.
There will be a memorial gathering from noon until the time of Mike’s memorial service at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, 225 N. Main St., Imlay City, Michigan.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites those wishing to honor Mike’s memory to consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association, donorservices.alz.org in recognition of the disease that brought his life to a close, or to the GoFundMe of his beloved granddaughter, Sofia (gofund.me/0ee312c99), in honor of her courageous journey through childhood leukemia.
