Back road trips

It’s been many long months, in the last two years. I have lost my dear friend Francheska (Kay Conway), before that her husband, Pat, of whom I was most fond, and the youngest in the family, my friend, Chase, who passed away at 56 years of age. The neighborhood is still sad, the house they all lived in is sad, but I know this too shall pass, because we (all the neighbors and friends) have such great memories of all of them, and soon the house may be home to others.

I cannot write about the gadabouts any more, they are dissolved. I cannot write about daily jokes, or trips that we once took. But I can and will keep writing about back road trips, as they are an indulgence of mine. I will occasionally reference my friends Francheska, and Giselle. How could I not, as some of the trips were worth showing to and going on with others, and the memories are most fond.

You probably don’t know this but back in 1978, I was given permission by the original owner of the Tri-City Times to pursue a column called “Attica’s Acorn Alley”, which I did for many years, until family life became so involved. Going back over the columns I think they may be revisited from time to time, and I would hope you enjoy them also. Once the mud is at a 2″ level, I will be taking the back roads. I will be planting, potting, and thinking of things that may interest you.

I am sure you had a paczki or two, and now it’s on to our lenten promises, and pretty soon we will be wearing shorts, a heavy sweatshirt, carrying an umbrella, possibly wearing some form of boots, and looking at the melting snow longingly, so as to get in the dirt and start gardening. Hopefully we will know if March will be a lion or lamb…..And no help from the farmers almanac, as it, too, has gone away….I only have one thing to say now…..I think you should all get out the humming bird feeders, wash them up and be prepared. Cause you know Michigan – on Monday it’s 20 degrees and on Tuesday we’re having a picnic at 80 degrees.
