Spartans ninth at home invite

Imlay City 138-pounder Daniel Rojas (L) took second in his weight class Saturday at the Thumb Counties Invite his school hosted.

TRI-CITY AREA — The Imlay City (108.5 points), Almont (55), Capac (53) and Imlay City ‘B’ wrestling team (three) earned respective finishes of ninth, 11th, 12th and 23rd last Saturday at the First Annual Thumb Counties Invitational in Imlay City.

St. Clair Shores Lakeshore won the 25-team event with 237 points.

Brady Czapiewski led Imlay City with a first. Czapiewski reached the title match at 157 pounds where he picked up a 6-5 victory over Armada’s Isayah Clark.

Daniel Rojas gave Imlay City a second. He advanced to the 138-pound title encounter, falling 17-1 to Lapeer’s Conner Haslett.

Alex Pettke provided Imlay City with a fifth. He completed his tournament run at 190 pounds with an 8-0 win against Chippewa Valley’s Logan Kowalski.

James Johnson and Brayden Cremeans added sixths to Imlay City’s cause. Johnson finished 126-pound action with a 4-0 loss to Armada’s Connor Harmon and Cremeans wrapped up his run at 285 pounds when he was pinned by Chippewa Valley’s Brendan Bowers with 3:29 elapsed.

Landin Watkins led Almont with a fifth. Watkins closed out 144-pound action when he pinned Lapeer’s Kaiden Coulter with 28 seconds gone.

Josiah Clark notched Almont’s other placewinning performance, a sixth. He finished his stint with a 9-5 loss to Armada’s Evan Kanniainen at 150 pounds.

Alberto Chapa and Sam Schneider paced Capac with sixths. Chapa ended his stint when he was pinned by Caro 132-pounder Aiden Mcintosh and Schneider completed his run at 138 pounds with a 13-6 setback to Royal Oak Shrine’s Hunter Anderson.
