Heads-up for scams this holiday season

Area law enforcement is alerting reasidents to beware of scams of all kinds as we enter the holiday season. Below is a report from the Romeo police department.

As the Christmas season is upon us, I want to remind residents of the many scams out there and to be diligent in preventing yourself from becoming a victim. Romeo PD recently experienced, unfortunately, a growing and verbally violent scam.

A resident came to Romeo PD in a panic as she received a phone call from a male who reported that he had kidnapped the resident’s adult daughter and was demanding a ransom. The male played the resident a recording of the daughter begging for her mom’s help.

Fortunately, we were able to convince the resident to breathe and give us a few minutes to work this problem, as she was prepared to withdraw the demanded funds and pay the perpetrator. We were able to locate the resident’s daughter at work, at which time she called her mother, alleviated any worry and prevented a significant financial loss.

In this circumstance, it appears, the daughter’s voice was recreated, likely with AI technology. This resident was absolutely convinced it was her daughter.

Recognize that this is happening and to please not jump to hasty conclusions. The people perpetrating these crimes are ruthless and cunning. They speak fast and aggressively as their goal is to overwhelm and confuse you and convince you that you have no time.

I was an investigator for twelve years, and have seen this scam attempted in a variety of ways. Sometimes your relative has been arrested and needs legal fees, sometimes they’ve been in an injury accident and need financial assistance with hospital bills.
