Chiefs pull off upset

Stuns Green Devils with comeback win

 

CAPAC — Capac battled their way back from an imposing 30-8 halftime deficit to pull out a dramatic 40-38 road victory over Brown City in an 8-player football regional semifinal clash last Friday night.

With the decision, Capac (8-2) advances to this Friday’s regional title game where it will square off against host Kingston (9-1). That confrontation is slated to get underway at 7 p.m. Brown City watches a 7-3 campaign reach an endpoint.

“We made a couple adjustments at halftime that helped on both sides of the ball,” Capac Co-Coach Troy Schneider commented. “Our kids just kept playing hard and good things happened for us,” he noted.

In Friday’s battle, Capac spotted Brown City an 8-0 advantage after one quarter was done.

Brown City then followed it up with a 22-8 second quarter edge, good for a commanding 30-8 lead at the half.

When the action resumed, Capac bounced back with an 8-0 third quarter advantage. That trimmed their deficit to 30-16 at the time.

Capac then started the fourth quarter with 16 more points, taking a 32-30 edge with 6:23 to play.

Brown City then answered with a touchdown and two-point conversion, going up 38-32 with 2:23 remaining.

To Capac’s credit, the Chiefs refused to quit. Instead the Chiefs responded to the challenge presented them with a five-yard touchdown run and a PAT tote by Schneider with 53 seconds to play.

That staked them to a 40-38 edge at the time, an advantage that would remain unchanged when the final second ticked off the clock.

Prior to the game-winning heroics, Capac had generated 32 points. That stretch included a Schneider four-yard touchdown run (followed by a PAT tote by Peyton Frankowiak); a Schneider five-yard touchdown run (followed by a Schneider PAT tote); a Brody Tesnow one-yard touchdown run (followed by a Schneider PAT tote); a Schneider one-yard touchdown run (followed by a Schneider PAT tote).

For the night, Tesnow proved true on two of four pass plays for 18 yards as Capac’s quarterback. He threw one interception along the way.

Schneider was the other Capac player who opted to air out the football. He connected on one of two attempts for 37 yards with no interceptions.

Their completions went to two different targets. Brenden Bussone (two catches for 18 yards) and Bryce Lietz (one reception for 37 yards) formed that group.

The Capac ground attack wound up with 364 yards.

Individually, Schneider (33 rushes for 236 yards) and Frankowiak (99 yards on 12 totes) proved Capac’s toughest players to stop. The remaining Chief rushes netted a combined 29-yard gain.

Wiley Roose (eight solos and seven assists), Schneider (eight solos and five assists) and Gabe Peters (seven solos and five assists) provided Capac’s highest tackle totals. Frankowiak (five solos and two assists) and Zach Stroup (two solos and three assists) supported their performances.
