Raiders remain unbeaten

ALMONT — The Almont varsity football team extended their record-setting Blue Water Area Conference winning streak to 21 games, accomplishing the feat with a 35-14 triumph against visiting Armada last Friday night.

With the final, Almont raises its mark to 6-0 and 5-0. Armada falls to 4-2 and 3-2.

“I am really proud of the way our guys competed tonight,” Almont Coach James Leusby commented. The defense was dialed in and the offense found its rhythm,” he noted.

“We are not where we want to be yet, but we are moving in the right direction. Next week we face a really good 6-0 Richmond team with the conference title on the line. We will need to have a great week of practice and play our best football of the season next Friday night.”

In Friday’s contest, Almont grabbed a 7-0 edge after one quarter was over.

Quarter two saw Armada outscore Almont 14-7, making it 14-14 at the half.

When play resumed, Almont struck with a 13-0 third quarter edge to go ahead 27-14.

The hosts then outscored Armada 8-0 the rest of the way, putting the finishing touches on a 35-14 win.

Almont generated their winning 35-point total aided by a Matthew Bacholzky two-yard touchdown run; a Jacob Stewart 45-yard touchdown run (followed by a PAT tote by Bacholzky); a Colten Karbel 11-yard touchdown run (followed by a successful extra point kick courtesy of Sean O’Neil); a Blake Lane to Brody Corneau 35-yard touchdown pass; and a Lane to Rian O’Neil 17-yard touchdown pass (followed by an accurate extra point boot by Sean O’Neil.

For the evening, Lane completed four of six pass plays for 91yards as Almont’s quarterback. He threw zero interceptions along the way.

His successful tosses were distributed to three different targets. Their ranks consisted of Corneau (two receptions for 62 yards), Rian O’Neil (one catch for 17 yards) and Logan Schapman (one reception for 11 yards).

The Almont ground attack amassed yards on 38 totes.

Corneau (11 rushes for 94 yards), Stewart (92 yards on seven totes) and Bacholzky (nine rushes for 51 yards) posted Almont’s top totals. The remaining 12 Raider totes netted a combined 12-yard gain.

Karbel (two solos and 11 assists), Cohen Ferqueron (one solo and 12 assists), Dalton Oliphant (four solos and six assists) and Bacholzky (two solos and six assists) registered Almont’s highest tackle outputs. Dominic Medley (one solo and five assists), Gordon Stolecki (six assists) plus Aiden Battani and Corneau (five assists each) made their presence felt as well.

The Almont defense also registered one takeaway. Luke Loomis (an interception) provided that.

Almont will look to continue their winning ways this Friday when it travels to Richmond for an important Blue Water Area Conference matchup. The contest is slated to get underway at 7 p.m.
