Almont wins its homecoming 38-13

ALMONT — The Almont varsity football team kept their perfect record intact, accomplishing the feat with a 38-13 homecoming victory over Blue Water Area Conference counterpart Cros-Lex last Friday night.

With the decision, Almont improves to 5-0 and 4-0. Cros-Lex slips to 1-4 and 1-3.

In Friday’s clash, Almont spotted Cros-Lex 3-0 edge after one quarter.

Almont then bounced back with a 10-3 second quarter edge, good for a 10-6 halftime lead.

When the action resumed, Almont struck with a 14-0 third quarter advantage. That hiked their cushion to 24-6 with 36 minutes gone.

Almont then outscored Cros-Lex 14-7 the rest of the way, good for a favorable 38-13 outcome.

The hosts generated their 38-point total aided by a Blake Lane 19-yard touchdown run (followed by a successful extra point kick courtesy of Sean O’Neil); an O’Neil 25-yard field goal; a Lane to Logan Schapman 40-yard touchdown pass (followed by an accurate extra point boot from O’Neil); a Lane to Schapman 59-yard touchdown pass (followed by a successful extra point kick courtesy of O’Neil); a Brody Corneau 41-yard touchdown run (followed by an accurate extra point boot from O’Neil); and a Matthew Bacholzky18-yard touchdown run (followed by a successful extra point kick courtesy of O’Neil).

For the night, Lane completed three of eight pass plays for 114 yards as Almont’s quarterback. He threw zero interceptions en route to those numbers.

His successful tosses went to two different targets. Schapman (two catches for 99 yards) and Bacholzky (one reception for 15 yards) formed that group).

The Almont ground attack managed 252 yards on 43 totes.

Individually, Corneau (13 rushes for 115 yards) and Bacholzky (66 yards on nine totes) put up Almont’s best numbers. The remaining 21 Raider rushes resulted in a combined 71-yard gain.

Colten Karbel (four solos and five assists) and Bacholzky (two solos and four assists) posted Almont’s highest tackle totals. Cohen Ferqueron (one solo and four assists), Aiden Howard (three solos and one assist) and Dustin Claeys (four assists) made their presence felt as well.

The Almont defense also collected a pair of takeaways. Dalton Oliphant and Corneau (an interception each) furnished those.

Almont will look to continue their winning ways this Friday when Blue Water Area Conference rival Armada pays a visit. That matchup lists a 7 p.m. starting time.
