Ellis helps Epic to a fourth place

CAPAC — Detroit’s Tiffany Ellis, a 1999 graduate of Capac High School, helped Epic to a fourth among Class E entrants at the Port Huron to Mackinac Race.

The race got underway on Saturday, July 12.

Epic generated an actual clocking of 41 hours, 39 minutes and 52 seconds for the Cove Island Course which covers 256 nautical miles.

The boat would wind up with a corrected time of 31 hours 32 minutes and 53 seconds, leaving them 38th overall among the field assembled.

“It was my fifth Bayview Mackinac Race and all have been with Epic,” Ellis commented. “We had a scare early in the race when a burst knocked the boat over and one of our crew members fell overboard,” she noted.

“But because this crew has been together so long and has been through the training, we knew what to do. Once we got him back on board, we were nearly in last place but were able to work our way up to just minutes outside of third by the finish line. I couldn’t feel luckier than to sail with people I trust my life to.”

The event marked the 50th Mackinac Race for skipper Ray Adams, whose wife Winnie (the co-owner of the boat) hails from Bad Axe.

Beth Craig (Warren), Gloria Crawford (Fenton), Lucas Doumanian (Boyne City), Mike Doumanian (Boyne City), Nick Hayes (Cottam, Ontario), Dean Kuhn (Detroit), Dean Waldrup (Novi) and Phil Zyskowski (Beverly Hills, Michigan) joined Ellis on the crew of Epic.
