Raiders fall in semifinals, 2-0

ALMONT — The 13th-ranked Almont girls’ soccer team ended their unprecedented post season run with a 2-0 loss to seventh-rated Warren Regina in a Division 3 semifinal soccer battle on Tuesday, June 10.

Barnabo Field, at Romeo High School, is where the action unfolded.

With the outcome, Warren Regina (7-5-6) moves on to a Friday, June 13 state title match slated for DeMartin Soccer Complex at Michigan State where it will face fourth-ranked Grand Rapids Catholic Central (12-8-2). Almont watches an outstanding 17-5-1 campaign reach an endpoint.

“It was a great experience competing at the state level,” Almont Coach Mike Kepler commented. This season proved Almont is a top soccer program in the state,” he noted.

“It was a historic season. We will look to build on that success. “It is not easy to make back to back state final appearances, however, this team has what it takes to compete with the best and will look to repeat.”

In Tuesday’s battle, Warren Regina struck first when Jenna Moeller connected on a shot with 24:21 to play until halftime.

The remainder of the first half would prove scoreless.

Following a 10-minute break, Warren Regina and Almont returned to the field intent on finishing off the contest victorious.

Warren Regina then widened the gap to 2-0 with another goal from Moeller, this one seeing her capitalize on a pass with 39:22 remaining during half number two.

Almont would battle them hard to the finish, only to fall by a 2-0 final score.

Anna LaBroski handled the goalkeeping responsibilities for Almont that evening. She finished with 11 saves.
