Heavy response by sheriff department; guns, jewelry and cash taken from home

 

IMLAY TWP. — Neighbors and family members were left shaken early Friday morning after a brazen alleged breaking and entering brought a strong law enforcement response to the area of Old M-21 and Weyer Rd. in Imlay Twp.

Multiple units from the Lapeer County Sheriff Department responded to a home in the 6400 block of Weyer Rd. in Imlay Twp. Friday morning, after receiving a report of a possible breaking and entering.

According to those close to the situation, a person had left the home and gone to Kroger’s in Imlay City around 9:15 a.m. and was gone for less than an hour.

During that time, law enforcement believes someone entered the home and allegedly took handguns, jewelry and cash.

K-9 tracking dogs were brought to the scene, according to sources, with one of the canines apparently sustaining a medical emergency while working the scene.

Deputies were observed in the area of old M-21 and Weyer Rd. interviewing neighbors and local businesses.

At one point during the incident, it was thought the subject(s) could have still possibly been in the residence. It’s believed an unspecified number of firearms were stolen from the home before the robbery was discovered.

No injuries were reported and the sheriff department continues their investigation.

Status on K-9 Thor: (Friday 4 p.m.) The Michigan State Police K-9 sustained injuries after authorities said he ingested poison during a search of property on Weyer Rd. just north of M-21 Friday morning.

K-9 Thor and his handler were assisting the Lapeer County Sheriff Dept.

While searching a barn, Thor reportedly ingested an unknown poison. He was rushed to an emergency vet clinic in Flint for medical treatment and later transferred to the MSU Veterinary Medical Clinic for further treatment.

A Lansing television station reported Friday that “Veterinarians at Michigan State University are treating a Michigan State Police K9 after authorities say he ingested some poison.”

The news agency was told by police the ingestion was not narcotics.

In a post on X, police say “a dog named Thor was helping deputies in Lapeer County with a breaking-and-entering call. They say the dog was helping search a barn when he “ingested suspected poison.”

He was kept at the facility for treatment and observation and was reported to still be alive as of late Friday afternoon.

The accident was not the first for Thor. It was his second run-in with a dangerous situation in the past six months.

He had just recently returned to work, following an exposure to drugs and testing positive for opioids, cocaine and THC last winter.
