Schneider is seventh in state

CAPAC — Capac 126-pounder Sam Schneider registered a seventh-place finish at the Division 4 individual wrestling state finals last week.

Ford Field in Detroit is where the action unfolded.

Schneider (41-14) opened tournament action Friday against New Lotrop’s Hunter Wolfe (39-12). That encounter ended with Schneider up 18-13.

He then fell to 1-1, dropping an 18-3 verdict to Lawton’s Austin Garcia (50-5). Garcia would go on to place second in the weight class.

Schneider would face Union City’s Mitchell Graham (38-12) next. It was there he improved to 2-1 with a 15-9 victory.

That placed him in Saturday’s action.

Schneider drew Riverview Gabriel Richard’s Andrew Frazier (17-5) as his next assignment. Their clash ended with Frazier, the eventual fourth-place finisher ahead 18-2.

He then faced Centreville’s Rockne Hamilton (43-14) for seventh place honors. That battle ended with Schneider registering an 11-2 triumph.

For his accomplishment, Schneider earned All-State accolades.

Tyler McKenney, a 113-pounder, provided Capac with a 1-2 mark at states.

McKenney (41-13) began his tournament stint against Martin’s Urijah Joostberns (33-14). That battle saw Joostberns, the eventual fifth-place finisher pin him with 1:17 elapsed.

He then challenged Rudyard’s Dalton Savoie, who was 13-5 when they met, next. It was there McKenney posted a 9-1 win.

McKenney would draw Blissfield’s Jude Rosas (45-13) as his next assignment. That encounter would see Rosas, the eventual fourth-place finisher, win by a pin with 2:25 gone.

Ryan Grant also represented Capac at the state finals.

Grant (40-13) started his tournament run Friday against Manistique’s Johnathan Weber (27-11). It was there he claimed an 18-0 win.

He then watched his tournament mark slip to 1-1 when he was handed a 23-6 setback by Martin’s Logan Gilbert (43-6), the eventual third-place finisher.

That meant Grant would face St. Louis Cole Grollimund (33-14) next. That clash wrapped up with Grollimund, the eventual seventh-place finisher, up 8-0.
