“Right place at the right time”

This Thanksgiving season is taking many twists and turns for a lot of us.

I want to say a big ‘thank you’ to those who took the time to respond to my quest for the “big people” to write a few paragraphs on what Thanksgiving means.

It was quite an undertaking that took a lot of pre-planning, starting back on October 1.

Generally, there was a common theme of thankfulness. Gratitude for what we have and how fortunate we are.

Short messages of how God has blessed us. Which he has. Even in ways we might not recognize.

I usually try to get in to the schools and have students share their thoughts on Thanksgiving.

But, this year, I chose the “big kids” and they came through strong. Thank you!

Then, while I was working on coming up with another “turkey story,” I was contacted by a lady who was nice enough to share her story with our readers.

Coincidence? Maybe. But, I choose to think it was the work of God opening a door for a story that I had no idea I would end up doing.

But yet, as I spoke with Apryl Faber, goodness, what an interesting story. I could have written so much more in that article.

For me, it was fascinating and interesting at the same time, how they do things at Faber Farm.

It left me thankful for people like the Fabers, and others, who make the special effort to produce healthy food and other items. Not to mention having nearly 200 various birds on their farm. I fully intend to check that place out some day next summer.

Then there is this unofficial fraternity I am part of. That’s how the “members” feel anyways. Former fire chiefs from my neck of the woods who stay in touch from time to time, sharing the good and bad. Guys willing to listen anytime something is on your mind.

It’s a great network of like minded men when it comes to public safety and serving our communities.

There’s former Chief Keith Berg of Kenockee Township, Larry Morden, also a previous Chief of Kenockee, and Keith Redlin, a former Chief of Brown City Fire Department and still a member of the Marlette Fire Department. All great guys that I enjoy staying in touch with.

Keith Berg shared a story Friday morning that touched me — and many others, and I wanted to share it with our readers.

It’s a story of acting on God’s prompting, an act of kindess and just an overall warm, fuzzy thing Keith did for a complete stranger.

Here is Keith’s story of human kindess.

“God places you in the right spot at the right time for a reason I guess. In my travels this morning (Friday), I noticed the most beautiful well lit large white cross in a front yard just East of Fargo Rd. on M-136. While passing by, I thought, what a beautiful sight and testament to God.

“Two miles later I passed a young man on the shoulder of the road. holding a small car seat in his left hand and displaying a hitchhikers thumb with his right hand.

“Mind you it was 37 degrees with a stiff north wind. I slowed and backed up, told him to jump in.

“He had been walking since 0330 trying to get to McLaren Port Huron (hospital) as his girlfriend was about to give birth to his first baby girl. He said no one would stop because he had a bandana on his face to help with the windchill.

“I put my morning plans aside and little did he know he was getting dropped off at the main entrance to the hospital, of course with a hot breakfast and coffee from McD’s.”

GOD IS GREAT !!!

Note: He had roughly 14 more miles to walk.”

Great job Keith!! Thankful for you and your heart!! Way to go!
