M-53 head-on crash claims one victim

Highway closed for several hours due to fatal wreck

 

IMLAY TWP. — A near head-on collision late last Wednesday morning forced a complete closure of M-53, just south of the I-69 interchange near Imlay City.

Emergency crews from Imlay City responded to the intersection of S. Van Dyke and Hunters Creek Rd, after receiving reports of a serious accident involving three people in two separate vehicles.

Although the Lapeer County Sheriff department has not released any information on the incident, Imlay City Fire Chief Keith Klobucar shared limited information.

“We were called around 11 a.m. to an accident just south of the M-53 overpass at I-69,” the Chief said.

“When we arrived, we saw two vehicles that were involved in a crash, with each vehicle landing on opposite sides of the road.”

Chief Klobucar said there was extensive debris covering the highway.

“With the location of the vehicles and all the parts scattered around, the road was closed down completely to let us work safely.”

He said it appeared a man and woman were driving south while a northbound vehicle had one occupant.

“It was just off of center of a head-on crash,” Chief Klobucar said, “There was one fatality.”

No information has been released regarding the victims, their ages or hometowns.

Responding agencies included Imlay City fire and police, Lapeer County EMS, Lapeer County Sheriff Department and Michigan State police. The roadway remained closed for several hours, to allow for investigation. Multiple calls to the sheriff department have gone unanswered.
