Almont cruises past Richmond

ALMONT — Almont earned a 43-7 win against visiting Richmond in a Blue Water Area Conference varsity football matchup last Friday night.

With the outcome, Almont raises their mark to 7-0 and 6-0. Richmond slips to 2-5 and 2-4.

“What an awesome atmosphere for our players tonight,” Almont Coach James Leusby commented. “I loved seeing all the former players and students return for homecoming to watch the boys clinch at least a share of the BWAC championship,” he noted.

“We have a lot of work to do this week if we want to be outright BWAC champions and meet one of our goals.”

In Friday’s matchup, Almont grabbed a 7-0 edge after one quarter was complete.

They then followed it up with a 14-7 second quarter advantage, pushing their cushion to 21-7 at the half.

When the action resumed, Almont continued to pull away. Aided by a 17-0 third quarter edge, the Raiders went ahead 38-7 with 36 minutes gone.

The hosts then outscored Richmond 5-0 the rest of the way, closing out a 43-7 win.

Almont produced their 43-point total aided by a Battani eight-yard touchdown run (followed by an accurate extra point kick courtesy of Sean O’Neil); a Chase Davedowski to Nolan Maxlow 12-yard touchdown pass (followed by a successful extra point kick courtesy of O’Neil); a Davedowski to Luke Winkler 60-yard touchdown pass (followed by an accurate extra point boot by O’Neil); a Winkler 10-yard touchdown run (followed by a PAT tote from Battani); a Davedowski to Battani 37-yard touchdown pass (followed by a successful extra point kick courtesy of O’Neil); a pair of safeties by Eric Haddon; and a 30-yard field goal from O’Neil.

For the evening, Davedowski wound up six of eight passing for 152 yards as Almont’s quarterback. He threw zero interceptions along the way.

His successful tosses went to five different targets. Winkler (one catch for 60 yards), Battani (two receptions for 42 yards), Eli McConnell (one catch for 34 yards), Nolan Maxlow (one reception for 12 yards) and Jacob Stewart (one catch for four yards) formed that group.

The Almont ground attack managed 198 yards on 31 totes.

Winkler (10 rushes for 84 yards) and Battani (71 yards on eight totes) supplied Almont’s top rushing outputs. The remaining 13 Raider carries netted a combined 43-yard gain.

Cohen Ferqueron (one solo and eight assists) provided Almont’s highest tackle totals. Tim Miller (two solos and five assists), Haddon (four solos and two assists), Colten Karbel (six assists) and Winkler (three solos and two assists) made their presence felt as well.

The Almont defense also registered one takeaway. Justin Pape (an interception) furnished that.

Almont will look to keep their perfect record intact this Friday when Blue Water Area Conference rival North Branch pays a visit. That matchup lists a 7 p.m. starting time.
