Ben Schurig scores TD for Almont

ALMONT — Last Friday night in a 56-0 rout of visiting Blue Water Area Conference rival Algonac, Almont’s varsity football team was able to run a special play for junior Ben Schurig that will long be remembered by those that attended

In an untimed down before halftime, Schurig took a handoff and ran 40 yards to the endzone for a touchdown much to the delight of fans of both teams.

“He is an exceptional young man that has Down’s Syndrome and lights up the hallways each day at our high school,” Almont Junior Varsity Coach Jeff Bacholzky commented. “Ben is the youngest of three boys as his older brothers Quinton (2022) and Jerry (2024) are Almont grads,” he noted.

“Also, Ben resides in Almont with his parents, Gerald and Kim. He began participating with the Almont football program when family friend and Almont junior varsity assistant coach Rich Davedowski inquired about including Ben with the team. Ben practices once per week and loves his teammates and coaches.”

The Almont football program would like to thank the Algonac football program led by Nick Matzka, the officials for the game led by Darrick Puffer and the MHSAA for helping make this possible.
