Almont falls 1-0 in regional play

ALMONT — The Almont girls’ soccer squad put up a good fight, only to fall by a narrow 1-0 count in a Division 3 regional semifinal battle on Tuesday, June 4.

Clawson City Park is where the action unfolded.

With the outcome, Flint Powers improves to 16-5-2. Almont watches an outstanding 16-4-1 season reach an endpoint.

“We fought hard for 80 minutes against a strong Flint Powers team,” Almont Coach Mike Kepler commented. “It was a heartbreak giving up a goal to break the 0-0 tie with only 10 minutes left in the game,” he noted.

“That is part of the game and we learn from our mistakes. We have 16 players on the roster returning next year. We will be back, but this time with experience.”

In Tuesday’s battle, Almont and Flint Powers ended the opening half with zero goals apiece.

The next 25 minutes of play would prove scoreless as well.

Then, with 10:58 showing on the second half clock, Flint Powers broke the deadlock on a goal by Lexi Afrika.

Down but not out, Almont nearly matched that tally with a breakaway by Lola Battaglia in the game’s final seconds. However, that opportunity was denied and the Chargers escaped with a hard fought win.

Anna LaBroski handled the goalkeeping responsibilities for Almont that day. LaBroski finished with eight saves.
