Helzer wraps up season at states

CAPAC — Capac 110-pounder Cierra Helzer went 0-2 last week at the Michigan High School Athletic Association-sponsored Girls’ Wrestling Individual State Finals.

Detroit’s Ford Field hosted the two-day tournament which unfolded last Friday and Saturday.

Helzer got her stint at states underway Friday when she was pinned by Portage Northern’s Alysse Koss with 1:38 elapsed. Koss would go on from there to place sixth in the weight class.

She then faced Standish’s Dannielle Christian next. Their encounter drew to a close with Christian ahead by an 11-6 outcome.

Helzer would finish her junior campaign with a 17-9 overall mark.

According to Michigan Grappler, Helzer’s bracket was the toughest out of the entire state tournament. It featured 11 returning state placewinners.
