Letter: Imlay City Federation of Teachers endorses 3 candidates, non-homestead renewal

As a 33-year veteran teacher at Imlay City Schools, a graduate of the district, and a lifelong supporter of our community, I have a lot of pride in Imlay City. It is a great place to raise a family and send your children to school.

My two children, my mother, and my two siblings are also graduates of Imlay City Schools, so our family has a long history here. I have also served as the president of the Imlay City Federation of Teachers for the last several years.

Imlay City Schools’ mission is simple: Every Student, Every Day. Upon review of the candidates, the ICFT feels that three candidates will support and help our students, staff, and the families of our community in carrying out our mission.

We are expressing our support for Doug VanDyk, Dr. Laura Zelenak and Tom Blount.

VanDyk and Zelenak are both incumbents who bring valuable experience and knowledge to the school board. Having people who understand the district and who have experience working through the challenges facing public education is important.

Blount’s children graduated from Imlay City Schools, and he currently has grandchildren in our district. He also brings a great deal of knowledge about our community and has served Imlay City in many roles: as a pastor, coach, and community leader. We believe he would be a good fit for the board and a valuable asset to our district.

Our union also encourages voters to vote YES on the Non-Homestead Renewal. The funding provided through this renewal is crucial to the day-to-day operation of our schools and helps us continue providing the education our students deserve. Supporting our schools is an investment in our children and in the future of our community.

I have spent 33 years working in this district, and I know how much our schools mean to the families who live here. I hope our community will vote, support our schools, and help keep Imlay City a great place to live, work, and raise a family.
