16 local teams heading to post-season this week

THUMB AREA — The Imlay City Spartans are in the high school football playoffs for the first time since 2020. 

The Spartans will take their 7-2 record into their first-round matchup at home when they host Corunna (4-5) later this week. 

It is just the fourth time since 2004 that Imlay City has qualified for the playoffs and the seventh time in school history the team has made the postseason.

The Almont Raiders continue their success on the gridiron as their engine keeps rolling along with hopes of returning to Ford Field. The undefeated Raiders (9-0) will host a 5-4 Flint Elite team Friday night in a Division 6 matchup. Almont is no stranger to the postseason, having rattled off 16 appearances in recent years.

Other area teams making the postseason include the Port Huron Redhawks in Division 3, Marysville (5-4) and Lutheran North (8-1) in Division 4, and Armada (5-4) and Frankenmuth (8-1) in Division 5. Division 6, along with Almont, features squads from Algonac (6-3), New Haven (6-3) and Marine City (9-0). Cass City (6-3), Millington (9-0) and Laker (7-2) represent the area in Division 7. Vassar, Ubly and Unionville-Sebewaing are Division 8 teams in the postseason.

In eight-player action, Division 1 Region 2 features Thumb teams including Dryden, Deckerville, Kingston and Marlette. In that district, the undefeated Dryden Cardinals (9-0) will host Kingston (5-4), while the Deckerville Eagles (8-1) will battle Marlette (7-2). The winners from those games will face off in Week 2. Peck (6-3) and Kinde North Huron (7-2) round out the field of Thumb teams in the playoffs.
