Lapeer County schools adopt new mandates ahead of fall return

LAPEER COUNTY — As local students prepare to head back to class in the coming weeks, every public school district in Lapeer County — along with the Chatfield School — will be implementing a newly mandated, unified safety framework designed to streamline emergency operations.

The update introduces a revised version of the Standard Response Protocol, an all-hazards emergency plan now required for all Michigan schools by the Michigan State Police. By enforcing identical safety terminology and procedures across every campus statewide, officials aim to eliminate critical confusion and cut down response times during potential crises.

To prepare families for the shift, local school districts are distributing detailed informational letters to parents, staff, and community members. These notifications precede targeted safety training sessions scheduled for both school personnel and students before the academic year gets underway.

Looking past the first week of school, administrators are planning a broader, county-wide safety initiative for the fall. Lapeer County schools will team up with local Emergency Management, law enforcement agencies, and emergency first responders to execute a joint tabletop simulation centered around the updated SRP framework.
