Fundraiser helps restore Mexican Church

IMLAY CITY — There is Mexican food, and then there is Mexican food.

While most people are familiar with burritos, fajitas, and other Tex-Mex specialties, Anna and Victor Aguilar and their friends will serve the flavors of Central Mexico starting at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at their home, 535 W. Fourth St. Food will be served until it runs out.

The Aguilars, whose grandparents came from Guanajuato, a 16th-century silver mining town, are raising money to help restore an old church there. Guanajuato is located about four and a half hours northwest of Mexico City.

The Aguilars and their friends will serve street tacos, fried tacos, tamales, and gorditas with a Central Mexican twist, as well as Puerto Rican rice. They will also offer desserts, including tres leches cake, cheesecake, and pambazos.

Pambazos are made with fried bread filled with potato and chorizo, dipped in warm red guajillo pepper sauce, and garnished with shredded lettuce, salsa, cream and queso fresco.

The event will also feature live music.
